Beginner Seed-Sowing Guide for South Africa
Most seed-starting problems come from sowing too deeply, too much water, unsuitable temperature or too little light. A simple routine makes success easier.
Prepare trays and mix
Use clean containers with drainage and a fine, free-draining seedling mix. Label every variety and record the sowing date.
- Clean containers
- Drainage holes
- Permanent labels
Sow at the correct depth
As a general guide, cover seed by about twice its thickness. Very fine seed is often surface-sown, while larger seed can be covered more deeply. Follow variety-specific guidance where available.
- Do not bury tiny seed
- Firm gently
- Water without displacing seed
Balance moisture, warmth and light
Keep the mix lightly moist rather than saturated. Give suitable warmth for the variety and move germinated seedlings into strong, appropriate light before they stretch.
- Check moisture daily
- Vent humidity covers
- Harden off before planting out
