How to Courier and Transplant Bare-Root Plants
Bare-root shipping can reduce parcel weight and protect pots from tipping. Careful unpacking and gradual recovery give the plant its best start.
Before travel
Only suitable established plants should be sent bare-root. Roots are protected from drying and the parcel is photographed before shipment.
- Healthy established roots
- Moist, not soaking, protection
- Secure labels and packaging
When the parcel arrives
Open promptly. Pot into free-draining mix at the original depth, water gently and rest the plant in bright shade rather than hot sun.
- Photograph courier damage
- Do not bend roots
- Do not overwater
The first two weeks
Some wilting or leaf drop can be a normal transport response. Protect from wind and introduce stronger light gradually after recovery begins.
- Avoid early fertiliser
- Watch stems and roots
- Be patient with dormant plants
