How to Germinate Kiwi Berry Seeds
Kiwi berry seed can be slow and variable. Cold, moist stratification imitates winter and often improves germination.
Cold stratification
Place seed in lightly moist sterile medium or on a barely damp paper towel in a labelled sealed bag. Refrigerate, but do not freeze, for about eight to twelve weeks.
- Use clean materials
- Keep it damp, not dripping
- Check for mould or early roots
Sowing after chilling
Surface-sow or cover very lightly. Keep warm with bright indirect light and steady gentle moisture. Vent a humidity cover daily.
- Never let tiny seedlings dry
- Avoid harsh midday sun
- Remove the cover gradually
Long-term expectations
Kiwi berry is a vigorous perennial vine needing strong support. Seedlings vary, take years to mature and may be male or female, so one plant does not guarantee fruit.
