How to Grow Lemongrass in South Africa
Lemongrass is a vigorous aromatic grass that enjoys sun, warmth, fertile soil and regular moisture during active growth.
Choose the right position
Plant in full sun in rich, free-draining soil. A large container works well where winter cold makes protection necessary.
- Full sun
- Room for a widening clump
- Large pot with drainage
Watering and feeding
Water regularly while the plant is actively growing, but do not leave roots in standing water. Compost or gentle feeding supports fresh leafy growth.
- Water deeply
- Mulch in hot weather
- Reduce watering in cold dormancy
Harvest and winter care
Harvest mature outer stalks and leave the centre growing. In frosty areas, protect the crown, move pots under cover or expect the plant to slow down and reshoot with warmth.
- Cut outer stalks
- Protect from hard frost
- Divide established clumps
